Britain's David Goldstein, aka Rupert Holmes, grew up in a musical family.  His family moved to New York City when Holmes was 6, so NYC claims him too.  In his 20's, Holmes began his music career as a session musician.  In the early 1970's, Holmes was part of the successful band The Cuff Links, which created the hit song "Jennifer Tomkins", which was ultimately released under the name The Street People due to legal issues.  The hit song "Timothy" was released by The Cuff Links.

As the 70's rolled on, Holmes was also a song writer, writing for artists like Dolly Parton, Wayne Newton, Barry Manilow, and even The Partridge Family.  It was in 1974 that he released his first solo album (Widescreen).  Holmes continued producing throughout the 1970's, but it was ultimately his 1979 release,  Partners in Crime, that was his greatest success.  It featured the songs "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" and "Him," which were both popularized in the early 80's.  Another top 40 hit from this album was "Answering Machine".  Holmes released two additional albums in the early 1980's, and several songs from these releases charted on the US Adult Contemporary charts.

Holmes continued his activity in the 80's, but as a playwright instead of a musician, a profession he continued well into the 2010's.  He also has worked on film, television, and has authored a number of books.  The Rupert Holmes Discography is as follows:

    ESCAPE (THE PINA COLADA SONG):
[chorus] If you like Piņa Coladas, And getting caught in the rain, If you're not into yoga, If you have half-a-brain, If you like making love at midnight, In the dunes of the cape, I'm the lady you've looked for, Write to me, and escape [etc]
