Kid Creole & The Coconuts was created and led by Thomas August Darnell Browder (aka August Darnel) of the Bronx.  Darnel started his music career in the mid 1960's as a member of his brother's band, The In-Laws.  Darnell left the band to purse an education in English, where he earned a Masters.  By the mid 70's, he teamed up with his brother again in the band Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band.  Their music was different, and they put a spin on their racial heritage in an ambiguous way.  It wasn't long before "Kid Creole" was born (named after the Elvis Presley film by the same name).

Kid Creole and the Coconuts debuted in 1980 with the album Off the Coast of Me.  Their first songs to break the top 40 (dance charts) were "I'm a Wonderful Thing, Baby", "Stool Pigeon", and "Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy" from Tropical Gangsters (1982).  Other noteworthy Kid Creole songs were "My Male Curiosity" from the Against All Odds movie soundtrack, "Endicott" from  In Praise of Older Women and Other Crimes (1985), and the songs "The Sex of It" and "I Love Girls" from the 1990 album Private Waters in the Great Divide

Kid Creole and the Coconuts continued producing into the 1990's and beyond (a new album in 2011).  Darnell also helped many of the members of his band with solo careers.  At the time of this writing in 2013, Kid Creole and the Coconuts were still active in studio and on stage.  The Kid Creole and the Coconuts Discography is as follows:
