Whitecross was another highly recognized Christian metal
that never reached the same height that Stryper did, but certainly was
in the top 10 of Christian metal bands from a Christian perspective
(other bands in this genre include Bloodgood and Barren Cross).
Whitecross has won several Dove awards.
Whitecross formed in 1985 in Waukegan, IL and the primary
backbone members of the band were Rex Carroll (guitars) and Scott Wenzel
(vocals). Whitecross has often been compared to Ratt, but we have
always thought of this as a somewhat loose association.
Whitecross' first
self-titled release
was released in 1987. Their follow ups
Hammer and Nail
in 1988 and
Triumphant Return in 1989
rounded out the 1980', although the band continued producing well into
the 1990's (although their sound was more pop metal).
By 1993, guitarist Rex Carroll had left Whitecross to
create a band called King James with a couple of ex-Stryper rockers, but
he couldn't stay away from Whitecross, as the band reunited again with
Carroll in 2000. At the time of this writing, the Whitecross
