Buy New and Used The Abyss, starring Ed Harris as Bud Brigman, was released in 1989.  In this movie, after a military sub is lost at sea, a small group of oil platform workers, paired up with some marines and a scientist, are asked to investigate.  While they are snooping around, they encounter an alien-water-changer-thingy that just so happened to have attacked the original sub.  Things start getting edgy because the Marines haven't been telling the entire story to the rest of the crew.
