SOUNDTRACK

Based on a true story, the academy award winning Out of Africa (1985) starred Robert Redford as Denys Finch Hatton and Meryl Streep as Karen Blixen.  Despite the film’s 7 Academy Awards, reviews were still mixed.  Many critics felt the pace was too slow and that the film was too long.  Regardless, it went on to earn a $100 million dollar profit.

This movie chronicles the life of Danish writer Karen Blixen (Streep) by weaving a tail of six loosely related stories from her life, a couple of which take place when she moves to Africa with her new husband.  After settling into a new life in Africa, Blixen meets a British colonial resident named Denys Finch Hatton (Redford), with whom she becomes close friends.  After her new husband fools around and passes syphilis to Karen, she travels to Denmark to receive treatment.  On her return, her husband continues his philandering ways, so Karen kicks him out of the house.  Although recovered from the disease, she is unable to have children, and decides instead to open a school for the tribal Africans in the area.

As time rolls on, she becomes romantically involved with Hatton, and although she desperately wants a permanent relationship with him, he ultimately prefers his freedom.  Eventually, Karen becomes financially broke after a fire destroys her plantation, and Hatton is asked to leave her home.  She sells everything she owns as she plans to move back to Denmark.  On her last day in the home, she has a bit of reconciliation with Hatton, who she agrees to let fly her to Mombasa in a few days so she can begin the long journey home.  Unfortunately, Hatton is killed in an airplane accident, and Hatton returns to Denmark with nothing left at all.
