Buy New and Used   Starring Sean Penn and Robert Duvall, Colors was released in 1988.  In this movie, Duvall plays the role of a veteran street gang cop, who intends to teach the new recruit (played by Penn) the ropes.  Penn soon learns his gung-ho tactics will get him no where when it comes to gangs.  This movie nicely demonstrates life from both perspectives, the police and the gangs of 80's Los Angeles.
