Buy New and Used   Children of a Lesser god, released in 1986, starred William Hurt and Marlee Matlin.  In this movie, Hurt plays the role of a teacher newly hired at a school for deaf children, and Matlin plays the role of a deaf school janitor.  Matlin is relatively withdrawn, and Hurt tries to make a connection by being creative in his attempts to communicate with her.
