Whether they smoked dope or not, "Stoners" is what we use to call all the long haired, Iron Maiden t-shirt wearing, wallet attached to a chain white trash that we went to school with.  And guess what?  That describes how many of us here at www.ilovethe80s.com used to dress.  Remember Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High?  He might not have been the quintessential stoner we describe here, but it is what a lot of people think of.  Check out the video below.
